CarrierIQ was a big concern in 2011/2012: Sniffing apps, pre-installed on your devices by their carrier, sending their collected data home. Though the (official) idea behind it was a positive (direct analysis in case of problems), this smacks of privacy intrusion – as the apps could be activated without the user knowing it, and the users not even having a chance to switch it off (or uninstall the related software from their devices). While the company no longer exists, its assets have been acquired and are still in use by AT&T.
